The Steelers have signed Mike Tomlin to a three-year contract extension, which will keep him in Pittsburgh through at least the 2027 season, the team announced Monday afternoon. Financial terms remained undisclosed.
"Mike Tomlin's leadership and commitment to the Steelers have been pivotal to our success during his first 17 years as head coach," Steelers President Art Rooney II said in a release. "Extending his contract for three more years reflects our confidence in his ability to guide the team back to winning playoff games and championships, while continuing our tradition of success."
Tomlin, 52, will enter his 18th season as the team's third head coach since 1969. Tomlin is 173-100-2, has won one Super Bowl and guided the Steelers to another. His contract was set to expire after the 2024 season.
"I am appreciative for this contract extension and thankful for Art Rooney II for his support during my first 17 years in Pittsburgh," Tomlin said in a release. "We are continuing to work diligently to get back to where we belong – sustained playoff success with the ultimate goal of winning the franchise's seventh Lombardi Trophy. I am very excited to get the 2024 season underway and provide our fans with a memorable year."
Tomlin was the youngest to coach in and win a Super Bowl at 36 years and 323 days old when the Steelers beat the Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII. The Steelers have won seven AFC North titles and reached the postseason 11 times in his 17 seasons. He has never had a losing record in a season.
The Steelers have reached the postseason in three of the last four years but have not advanced past the Wild Card round under Tomlin in that stretch. The Steelers have not won a playoff game since the 2016 Divisional round.
The Steelers have not had an offense ranked inside of the top 12 in scoring since 2018, but their defense has been in the top six in scoring in three of the past five years. In 2023, the Steelers were sixth in the NFL in scoring defense.
