RICHMOND, Va. -- Sure, the Browns generally got the better of the Steelers (along with the rest of the NFL) in the early days of their rivalry, as my Cleveland-fan father often delighted in ribbing me about when I was a kid. Still, those early Steeler teams did occasionally get their licks in, as they did on this Sunday 70 years ago, when Ray Mathews scored a record four touchdowns. It’s a feat still unrivaled in team history, despite an entire wing of the Pro Football Hall of Fame suiting up in black and gold in the decades since.

While we’re on the topic of Cleveland, I have to recognize the passing of the great Jim Donovan, Browns broadcaster extraordinare since their rebirth in 1999. I can remember when Donovan first became the nightly sports anchor on WKYC, my parents’ broadcast of choice growing up, and man, I enjoyed all those great NFL games he called on NBC in the 80s.
